Our Motto: “Let’s start writing our letters!”
“Let’s explore the world of science! Let’s put on a musical for Mom and Dad! And we are going to ride a bus!!!” This program encourages students to realize that learning can be fun.
Through a combination of informal play and structured activities, we are focusing on preparing our students for Kindergarten, based upon the Pennsylvania State Learning Standards. We monitor our students for kindergarten readiness, which we discuss with parents and caregivers informally and in parent-teacher conferences.
Our pre-kindergarten students learn to write letters with our wonderful program, “Handwriting Without Tears (c).” They then use those writing skills to develop pre-reading skills with our weekly reader.
Science is an important component of our program. With Miss Ashley, our science teacher, the children visit the planets, the rainforest, and the penguins in Antarctica. They learn about volcanos, animals, and how the heart and other body organs function. The children will hatch some baby chicks and watch caterpillars turn into butterflies. We love to see the children perform experiments and discover things!
Music is another very important part of our program. The children have fun with instruments, rhythms, and music. In addition, their confidence and enthusiasm is adorable when they volunteer and perform – with real “acting roles” – in the musical performances that they give for their families. It’s standing room only at these shows!
A typical day begins with circle time where various lessons are taught pertaining to the season. Daily teacher-directed activities vary in the area of language arts, science, social studies, music, number awareness and art. The children then move freely around a variety of learning and creative materials available for them. Some of these include building blocks, construction equipment, puzzles, dolls, games, books, dress-up clothes, riding toys, puppets, and housekeeping items. At the same time, crafts and learning activities are done in small groups. Physical activity takes place daily in a large gym-like room. The children enjoy a snack time, consisting of a nutritious treat and drink.
Weekly activities include library time, show and tell, focused letter and number activities, music and science programs. We have a very large preschool library that the children visit weekly and check out books. The class goes on periodic field trips to the Symphony, Playhouse, museums, the Aviary, a farm, Phipps Conservatory, and North Park. We use school buses and the children love the ride almost as much as the visits!
Through our music program, the children give two great performances each school year and get the opportunity to wear costumes, sing solos, and have speaking parts. Family and friends are invited to attend.
The growth and confidence that our students display is amazing! We know that they have received a great foundation at Perry Highway Pre-Kindergarten and are ready for the “big school.”
